Russia blocked access to Twitter. According to Interfax, the Federal Service for Supervision of Telecommunications, Information Technology and Media or Roskomnadzor (RKN) restricted access to the platform. This action was taken in compliance with the February 24 request of the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office.
Twitter had already announced that its service was “restricted for some people in Russia.” This announcement came two days after the Russian prosecutor filed the request to restrict the platform on Russian territory. Twitter also said they would continue to work to keep access to the platform secure.
These retaliation have already been implemented with Facebook. Russia alleged cases of “discrimination against Russian media and information resources by Facebook” since October 2020. This began early last week when Russia announced that Facebook would begin to be partially restricted as its media communication were being censored by the social network.
Everything seems to indicate that it is following the same steps with Twitter, partially blocking the platform initially to conclude with the total restriction of the platform within its territory. What other social networks will follow them?
Recall that this week, Twitter announced new labels that would carry tweets with links to media affiliated with the Russian government. The labels warn users to “stay informed” in order to avoid misinformation.
The platform also began limiting the spread of tweets with the same affiliation. Previously, an identification label had already been added to the accounts linked to the governments of different countries.
In recent days, different technology companies have joined the vetoes imposed by governments of different countries on Russia, so the Russian government will probably continue to block services in its country in response to the actions of these companies.
