When it comes to system updates, Android suffers a lot compared to iOS. While iPhones are kept updated for 5-7 years, it’s hard to find an Android smartphone that exceeds 3 major updates. And for good reason, since the two systems work completely differently. Still, consumers expect long-term service when buying a smartphone and this is a good example of brand tracking.
On this point, Samsung acts as a good student and has even surpassed the master now by offering a longer follow-up than Google.
4 years of updates…
In 2021, Samsung promised it: its Galaxy would be updated for 4 years. The thunderous announcement, however, lacked details. Major updates or security updates? At what frequency ? 4 years, so 3 version updates? With its new 2022 flagships, the Korean giant gives more details and shows its desire to be the best in the field.
In the Galaxy Tab S8 press release published yesterday by evleaks, we can read that the new tablets from Samsung will receive 4 generations of OS updates and 5 years of security updates. By way of comparison, Google, although the most regular since it is the very developer of Android, only offers 3 major updates on its Pixels.
A support that affects all the top of the range
In the footnotes of the press release, we can read that this update cycle concerns both the Galaxy Tab S8, but also the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra, the Galaxy S21, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3. All of the brand’s premium devices released since early 2021 will therefore enjoy a long lifespan. For the mid-range, we should be content with what the competition offers on the high end, which is already very good…
