Yosemite will work hand in hand with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Rockefeller University and MIT!
Steve Jobs He was always jealous of his private life, in fact, we are still discovering it through the documents that have come to light with the consent of his heirs. But, this way of being spread among his family members, about whom little is known, beyond the interviews they give from time to time. However, this week Reed Jobs, one of his sons, has starred in news that highlights his concern for cancerthe same disease that took his parents, with only 56 years.
According to a report published from The New York Times, Reed Jobs, is starting a venture capital firm to invest in new cancer treatments, called Yosemite. Today, Reed, 31, has proposed this initiative as a division within the Emerson Collective, an organization founded by his mother in 2004, but is now run by him.
An initiative in honor of Steve Jobs
Yosemite will operate a for-profit business but will maintain a donor-advised fund. Currently, the firm has raised $200 million from investors and institutions, including venture capitalist John Doerr, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Rockefeller University, and MIT. His name alludes to a sentimental connection: the national park where his parents were married in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California.
Through a question-and-answer session on the Emerson Collective website, Reed explained that while most other players within the organization are focused on philanthropy or investing, it is possible to run actions in both directions. He further added that the “main goal” of his team, Yosemite, is to develop “new therapeutic options for cancer patients.”
Of course, the project touches Jobs personally, who lost his father due to complications caused by this disease. According to statements by Reed Jobs to DealBook’s Andrew Ross Sorkin:
My father was diagnosed with cancer when I was 12 years old. I never wanted to be a venture capitalist…But I realized that when you’re actually incubating something and putting it together, it can make a big difference in what assets are part of it, what direction it’s going to go, and what the scientific approach is going to be.
