stop using terms from Star Wars and football

Cybersecurity firm Specops Software has released an internal analysis of more than 800 million hacked passwords. Although most of them are long and complex, there are also a lot of overly simple keywords, many of which come from Star Wars and the world of football.

Some themes seem more risky than others. On May 3 and 6, the cybersecurity company Specops Software published a barometer of the most hacked passwords online.

The firm has analyzed more than 800 million compromised passwords, particularly as part of its computer protection activities for companies. And, surprisingly, more than 80% met the length and complexity requirements of the main cybersecurity institutions.

However, the simplest terms are still numerous and remain the most vulnerable and certain keywords linked to two very common passions are omnipresent in the list.

3 May the strength of your password be with you

Qwerty, password and password

Simplicity remains the main Achilles heel of hacked passwords. According to Specops Software, “qwertyremains the most common compromised password. Similarly, almost 19% contained only lowercase letters.

The cybersecurity company also lists the most hacked basic passwords. Although less used today due to the password creation requirements of many sites, they are still targeted by hackers.that target the weakest link“.

We thus find the termsadmin», «welcome», «password” or “p@ssw0rdand its derivatives.

Similarly, the most common French terms are also very numerous in use: “How’s it going», «between” And “THANKSare the most commonly hacked in this category. Without forgetting the good oldpassword“, who remains 6th in the standings.

Very concerned old football fans

Among these simplest passwords, one theme stands out in particular: keywords relating to football. Beyond the classicssoccer(140,000 mentions) andsoccer“, we also find the London stadium of “wembleyin the top 10 of this category.

Above all, it is the legendary players who regularly appear in the list. Specops Software even listed the most used names. Here are the top 10:

  1. Lato
  2. carlos
  3. Kane
  4. Didi
  5. Villa
  6. Henry
  7. Hagi
  8. Milla
  9. Xavi
  10. Rossi

Certain terms also give clues to the age of Internet users using these passwords. Grzegorz Lato, a former Polish striker from the 60s and 70s, largely monopolizes the podium with more than 174,000 mentions. Conversely, Messi and Ronaldo are 14th and 18th respectively.

May the strength of your password be with you

However, beware of being mocking behind your screen, since another theme very popular with pop culture fans is omnipresent in the list of hacked passwords: the Star Wars universe.

The cybersecurity company has listed many hacked passwords referring to the sci-fi saga. Here are the top 10 hacked passwords:

  1. yoda (37,000 times)
  2. starwars (22,000 times)
  3. ewok (17,000 times)
  4. Hansolo
  5. Darth Vader
  6. bobafett
  7. darthmaul
  8. grogu
  9. obiwankenobi
  10. lukeskywalker

So football and Star Wars fans would have less good computer hygiene than others? Let’s not draw hasty conclusions either: these two themes are the passions of hundreds of millions of people around the world, which necessarily increases their presence in this type of list.

Whatever your passion, it’s simplicity that increases your risk of being hacked. So prefer long and complex passwords rather than the name of the icon of your dreams.
