Will Byers is one of the central characters of the series stranger things from Netflix. Also the motor center of several of the most important events of the argument. However, in the fourth season, the series showed him suffering from what seemed like a deep existential and emotional crisis. The reasons seemed to be mysterious, although everything seemed to indicate that they were related to Mike and the feelings that Will could experience towards his closest friend.
Finally, the last two episodes of the season of stranger things they ended up narrating, in a subtle and kind way, Will’s dilemma. It all happened while he was traveling in the company of Jonathan, Argyle and Mike to Nevada in search of Eleven. In the middle of a conversation in which Mike tried to explain his feelings and confusion regarding ElevenWill took the floor. And he not only made it clear what is going on inside of him, but the painful way he tries to cope.
“You are the heart of this group,” Will insisted. And he finally showed him the enigmatic painting that he was seen carrying out during the previous chapters of stranger things. When unfolded, the oil painting showed a medieval battle scene, no doubt inspired by the long role-playing games of his childhood. The image also shows a figure carrying a sword and a shield, with an engraved heart. Will points to the character and smiles sheepishly. “It’s obvious,” he says quietly. “But you are the heart of the group, the one who makes it feel worth following.”
A heartfelt relief that turns Will’s course
Nevertheless, Will’s heartfelt veiled confession at the end of stranger things it doesn’t end there. To Mike’s deep doubts about whether Eleven will be able to love him, the answer is as painful as it is intimate. “You will always be needed by Eleven. You will be the person he leans on. The one that makes her feel special and loved, even if she feels like an aberration.”
Suddenly, it is clear that Will is no longer talking about his friend’s possible feelings for Mike, but what the latter makes him feel. Much more, when she emphasizes the importance of that love, of Mike’s support and support for Eleven. Through tears and as Jonathan listens worriedly from the driver’s seat, Will ends by stating that sometimes “love is everything.” Even, he insists, “if you are different from everyone and that makes everything even worse”.
In the end, Mike doesn’t fully understand that his friend isn’t just referring to his relationship with Eleven; the tone from the beginning of stranger things. Confused and dazed, Will ends up bursting into anguished tears. Nevertheless, he was finally able to overcome the central point of all his conflicts. Later on, he will look sad and tired, but no doubt much more relieved after his heartfelt and subtle confession.
Will out of the closet and a new journey in Stranger Things
Will’s confession was a scene long awaited by fans. Since the third season, there were indications that the sexual orientation of the youngest of the Byers would be analyzed sooner or later. But Will’s words came at a moment of enormous importance.
At the most complicated and painful point of stranger things, the plot managed to find a moment to understand and delve into one of its central characters. And perhaps leave the door open to relate that newfound sincerity and strength to whatever lies ahead for you.
