Like last October, more electric cars were sold in France than diesel models. Two Tesla occupy the first two places of the best-selling electric cars in November 2022, while over the year, it is still the Peugeot e-208 which dominates.
After months, if not years, complicated for the French automotive market, in recent months, this one finds a little colorwithout really regaining its pre-covid level yet.
In November, in France, 133,960 new cars have been registered according to AAA Data figures, an increase of 10% compared to the same period last year. The sector is still affected by a shortage of components, inflation, but also the cost of energy and raw materials. Taking a “normal” comparison index, namely the month of November 2019, the drop is still -22%.
Diesel in free fall, electric is still progressing
As in the months of September and October last, diesel models lose out against electric cars. Registrations of electric vehicles now outnumber those of diesels. Over the first eleven months of the year, 100% electric models represent 13% of the market. The market nevertheless remains dominated by petrol models (37% market share) and hybrids (28% share), despite the erosion of the plug-in hybrid segment (-11%).
Still a minority compared to other engines, these could end up disappearing over the next few years, while the European Union is aiming for a 100% reduction in CO emissions.2 new cars by 2035, which is equivalent to the end of the sale of thermal models, including hybrids.
This trend could be confirmed during the month of December, when the government announced an increase in the ecological bonus to 7,000 euros for the most modest households. Enough to encourage motorists to switch to electric, while the amount of aid for the rest of the households will then increase to 5,000 euros from the 1er January 2023. It is therefore logical to expect an increase in registrations by December.
This constant increase in sales of electric cars is explained in particular by tax incentives, but above all by the increasingly large supply, with cheaper models such as the Dacia Spring. But also by the expanding network of charging stations, while autonomy remains one of the main obstacles to the purchase of an electric car.
Tesla back on top
As you are surely aware, Tesla registrations alternate “good and bad” depending on the month, simply because deliveries are governed by arrivals by boat. The brand’s vehicles are delivered rather infrequently. They are mostly transported by boat from China, except for a few versions of the Model Y which come from the new Gigafactory in Berlin.
The acceleration of the production rate of the electric SUV in Berlin has also helped to post more regular figures, especially with the arrival of the Model Y Propulsion which appears in the figures for this month of November. The first two models registered in France in November were Tesla Model 3 (2,809 registrations) and Tesla Model Y (2,891 registrations).
The two models are ahead of the Dacia Spring (1,954 copies), in third position, and then we find the Renault Mégane E-Tech (1,783 copies) and Peugeot e-208 (1,428 copies). Looking at the figures since the beginning of the year, it is the Peugeot e-208 which comes in first position (17,886 units), followed by the Dacia Spring (15,526 units) and the Fiat 500e (14,413 units)
Among the interesting and “amusing” data, let’s note that the Toyota bZ4X, which will soon find its way back to dealerships after major problems, has been registered with only one unit, while the Honda e continues to live a complicated career with only four copies sold in November 2022.
