The power of modern GPUs extends well beyond video games. NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090, a cutting-edge graphics card, reveals its ability to crack complex passwords in record time. A security company has conducted eye-opening tests that demonstrate this.
Known for its ability to improve performance in video games with path tracing for example, Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090 also demonstrates impressive capabilities in security area. Tests conducted by Hive Systems, a computer security company, revealed that this graphics card can decrypt passwords using its large amount of calculations,
A hashing algorithm is a method of cryptography that transforms passwords into complex sequences of characters. Its goal is to make them virtually impossible to find in their original form. Hive Systems tested two types of algorithms: MD5 and bcrypt. The former is older and less secure, while bcrypt is more robust and widely used to strengthen the security of user data.
The GeForce RTX 4090 took less than an hour to crack a complex password
In tests, the GeForce RTX 4090 took an hour to “crack” a password with the MD5 algorithm. With bcrypt, the same password would take approx. 99 years old to be decrypted. This difference shows why organizations like banks, online services and database management systems favor the latter to protect the sensitive information of their users.

The strength of a password and the diversity of characters it contains also play a crucial role in data protection. But when it comes to data protection, it’s not just about combining it with a good hashing algorithm. Companies implement several layers of security, such as two-factor authentication, encryption of data in transit and regular security audits. Their purpose is to ensure that information remains safe from unauthorized access. These combined practices offer a solid resistance against hacking attempts, even against powerful CPUs like the RTX 4090.
