It was inevitable, some even saw it coming years in advance, but it’s still good news that will make many smile. In the month of September 2022, the French automobile market recorded 22,481 registrations of electric cars, while diesel cars posted 20,136 registrations. While several studies have shown that electric is much less polluting than diesel, and that France has long put forward this mode of motorization, there is reason to rejoice.
The year 2022 has also been particularly good for the electricity market. According to NGC Data, it has experienced a 13% growth in market share in just a month. Then, in September, the counters exploded to 16%. A popularity that can be explained by various factors: the boost from the government first, with its ecological bonus of €6,000 maintained until next year (it will then increase to €5,000 on January 1), or even the leasing project that will allow you to pay your vehicle €100/month.
The electric car is becoming more popular than diesel vehicles
But this is not the only invoice to take into account. Several other cases have also undermined the popularity of diesel, like dieselgate or the recent surge in prices at the pump. And then there is the finally acknowledged enthusiasm of manufacturers for this means of transport. In recent years, electric models have been flourishing at dealerships, who are now making them their priority for production.

As François Roudier, spokesperson for the Automobile Platform (PFA), explains, manufacturers have “need to ‘launch’ this electricity market and escape penalties from Europe in the event of a poor CO2 balance of their sales”. Result: as soon as the components are available, in particular the semiconductors, the priority is now to manufacture electric cars.
