retro games are classic titles or titles inspired by old games and readapted to our time. Retro games are often inspired by 1990s PC games, arcade games, or arcade titles and are designed with pixelated graphics. In this selection for iPhone and iPad you will find the best retro games from the App Store.

The best retro games on the App Store

  • Golden Ax Classics
  • swordgo
  • TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge
  • Horizon Chase
  • Apple Knight
  • Goblin Sword
  • streets of rage
  • huntingdown

Tales of Monkey Island

For many, Monkey Island is the most epic adventure series of all time. It’s about a retro game style point-and-click with a fascinating story and a deep narrative full of jokes and sarcasm about the pirate world. A saga developed by LucasArts in which you must get into the skin of Guybrush Threepwood while he tries to become the most important pirate in the Caribbean.

Golden Ax Classics

Golden Ax is a beat ’em up of 16 bits developed by SEGA in which you will have to defeat all kinds of enemies with an axe, a shield and magic potions. It is the classic retro arcade game in which you always ended up inserting a 100 pesetas coin to avoid the game over. The bundle includes the complete saga with Golden Axe, Golden Ax II and Golden Ax III.

swordgo

We continue our collection of retro games with Swordigo, one of those platform games for iPhone and iPad that will leave you speechless. It has a fabulous story, a soundtrack that immerses you fully in the game and very simple controls to use. Has it all. Without a doubt, one of the best in the App Store.

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge

Believe it or not, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had their own retro game for the NES back in the ’90s and it was absolutely amazing. Now they’re back with a modern adaptation of the classic in a game beat ’em up with some excellent graphics and very well achieved game mechanics. Cowabunga, fellas!

Horizon Chase

If we talk about retro games we can’t forget about Horizon Chase, a title from car races inspired by big 90’s hits like Out Run and Top Gear. This 16-bit arcade game will allow you to participate in exciting races through multiple circuits and with all kinds of cars. Chase the horizon at full speed with this fantastic retro racing game from the App Store.

Apple Knight

Apple Knight is the typical retro arcade platform game in side scrolling inspired by medieval times. Chests, spells, potions, weapons, dragons and fireballs. Undoubtedly, one of those retro games that will keep you glued to the iPhone or iPad screen for hours. Also, it has some RPG components to improve your armor and weapons.

Goblin Sword

From the same cut as the previous game, Goblin Sword presents us with a world of monsters and dungeons in which we will have to collect loot, defeat enemies, overcome obstacles and improve our skills to finish off an evil sorcerer. has until 89 levels, 13 final bosses, 30 different weapons, 14 skins and some graphics, which without ceasing to be retro, are very well defined. iPadízate’s retro recommendation, we loved it!

streets of rage

Streets of Rage is a beat ’em up from SEGA with the pixelated graphics of the 90s era and wonderful gameplay. The controls of this mobile retrofit are very intuitive, it has four main characters and 8 levels of side scrolling full of all kinds of enemies that are willing to kill you.

huntingdown

Huntdown is a spectacular retro game in which you will control a bounty hunter who must eliminate his targets in a dark metropolis overloaded with violence and crime. Until 20 levels and final bosses with three main characters to choose from. It’s a very immersive game with depth that’s hard to find these days. Of course, we recommend playing Huntdown on the iPad to enjoy and savor all the details and nuances of this great retro game from the App Store.

sonic the hedgehog

What about the most charismatic and funniest hedgehog of all time? Fast-paced levels, rings, jumps, epic boss fights and lots and lots of speed. This retro game offers up 7 classic zones of the saga in which you must obtain the best score possible and collect the largest number of rings while trying to put an end to Dr. Eggman’s Machiavellian plans.

Super Mario Run

Since we don’t have a classic Super Mario game as such in the App Store, we recommend this modern adaptation of the retro games of the nice Nintendo plumber. This style title endless runner for iPhone and iPad has 24 levels, multiplayer mode, and loads of iconic playable characters of the series

galaxiga

Galaxy is a retro type game shoot ’em up whose theme is the typical one of shooting Martians in a spaceship. One of the many games inspired by Space Invadersa famous game developed by Tomohiro Nishikado in 1978. If you have never tried one of these games, we recommend you do so, you will not regret it.

Retro Goal

We end our collection of retro games with a Football game. This 16-bit title will allow you to choose a team from the best leagues in the world (it does not have licenses for names and clubs) and manage each aspect. you can even make decisions that affect your season in press conferences. And yes, many of the football games back then had pixelated graphics like that… and it was great!

This has been all about retro games in the iPhone and iPad App Store. As you may have seen, we have included retro games of all kinds: spaceships, knights from medieval times, racing cars, sports and the most famous classics. But unfortunately they can’t all be there. What are the best retro games on the App Store that you think we should include on this list?
