While most rumors are instead focused on the iPhone 14 coming next September, some are already predicting what to expect for the 2023 iPhone. In a shareholder report, analyst Jeff Pu again claims that the iPhone 15 Pro will feature a periscope lens with 5x optical zoom. He was talking about 10x zoom so far.
The 5x periscopic zoom for next year
According to the analyst, Apple is in negotiations with Lante Optics, which is expected to be the main supplier of the periscope lenses that will be used in the 2023 iPhones. The report claims that the Cupertino-based company has already received component samples and a final decision should be made by May.
If all goes according to plan, Apple will include its vendor’s periscopic lens in the high-end models of 2023, which will certainly be called iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Jeff Pu affirms that in the event of an agreement, Lante Optics is likely to supply more than 100 million components to Apple, which will have a huge positive impact on the company’s revenue.
This isn’t the first time Apple has been rumored to include a periscope on the iPhone 15. An earlier report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also mentioned that the company was working on inclusion of a periscopic lens on the iPhone from the second half of 2023 in order to offer a better optical zoom.
For those unfamiliar with this technology, periscopic lenses rely on a prism that reflects light to multiple internal lenses at 90 degrees to the camera sensor. This allows the length of the lens to be much longer than a telephoto lens of the same size, and therefore to achieve a much better optical zoom. Samsung and Huawei already offer such technology in their smartphones, which allows up to 10x optical zoom and up to 100x combined zoom.
While the iPhone 15 Pro announcement is still a long way off, rumors suggest that this year’s iPhone 14 will have upgraded cameras with a 48-megapixel wide lens capable of shooting 8K video. The next generation of iPhone will be announced this fall at the same time as the Apple Watch 8 in particular.
