Avtotor, a Russian manufacturer, has just presented the Avtotor Amber. Designed in partnership with the Moscow Polytechnic Institute, it is the very first 100% electric vehicle manufactured by a Russian company. Its main characteristic? An absolutely atrocious design that would make the Fiat Multipla look like a top model.
In the history of the automobile industry, we have been treated to several atrocities from a design point of view. We can cite the Pontiac Azteka hazardous cross between an SUV, a minivan and a pickup, or even the Toyota Scion, a fridge on four wheels intended for young drivers. For many, the prize nevertheless goes to the Fiat Multiplathe horrible minivan from the Italian manufacturer recently brought up to date by the thieves at Vilebrequin.
However, thanks to the Russian manufacturer Avtotor, we today have a new pretender to the throne: Avtotor Amber. Behind this name hides the very first Russian 100% electric car. Designed in partnership with the Moscow Polytechnic Institute, this little city car stands out for its absolutely atrocious design which would make the Multipla look like a beauty.
Here is the Avtotor Amber, an ugly electric car
Between its strange and prominent grille, its tiny headlights which give it a terrifying look and let's say original proportions (to be polite), nothing is right in terms of design. Barely presented, the car has already triggered the hilarity of Internet users on social networks (she has her dedicated page on Reddit).
“All the real designers have left Russia. The Avtotor Amber will go down in history as the ugliest car ever made,” mocks a user. “It looks like a car without a license, but uglier,” mocked another user.
According to Avtotor, this is a first prototype, which suggests (and we hope for the brand) that the design of the car is set to evolve. Mass production of the city car is planned for 2025, at the Siberian site of Kaliningrad, a factory known for producing certain Hyundai, BMW or Kia vehicles for the Russian market.
An electric car with strong symbolism
For Russia, Avtotor is above all a means of demonstrating the country's industrial capabilities, heavily impacted by international sanctions decreed in response to the war in Ukraine. At the moment, we have very little information on the technical characteristics of the vehicle.
However, we know that it will be possible to rent the battery, like what Renault offered with the Zoe at its launch. The idea being to reduce the entry ticket for the Avtotor, which aims to become a popular electric car on Russian territory.
