Folding phones have become the great desires of the main brands, especially in the case of Samsung, which is the firm that has a more solid range of these devices. And as the brand already anticipated a few months ago, the sales of these devices they will not stop growing.
Sales rise strongly, but not as much as expected
That is the summary made by DSCC, Display Supply Chain Consultant, which is the consultant specialized in the supply chain of screens, essential for this segment. According to them, the shipments of the folding mobiles will grow up to 94% this year, which is of course an excellent result. Of course, not everything is positive, because this result has had to modify downward by 6% compared to what had been initially estimated for this year.
The same as shipments in general, which will be 17% lower than expected at first, falling to 20.5 million units. Despite this, we are facing a year-on-year increase of 34%. This is something that is happening as a result of the turbulence in the market, which is gradually stopping as the economic situation is more adverse for consumers.
In 2023 it will continue to grow
This consultant has revealed that shipments of folding screens for this type of device It will be 12% less than what was originally planned, with a total of 17.7 million units throughout the year. A figure that is still much higher than that of 2021, when 10 million were shipped, which means that from one year to the next the shipment of these components has increased by 77%.
Compared to next year, growth will continue, although it will be somewhat less vigorous. 2023 shipments expected to grow 34%, so the increase will no longer be as pronounced as the one we have known this year or the previous one. And it is that as we say, the economic crisis that is coming, or that in some way is already threatening us, is going to change the trend of the market in general, not only of smartphones, contracting consumption. Hence, although the foldable phone market will continue to grow over the next few years, it will not do so aggressively right away, precisely because of what we said about the recession drums.
The first thing that is dispensed with when there is economic problems It is one of non-essential expenses, and obviously smartphones, and more foldable, are not essential products, far from it. In addition, the high price of folding mobiles makes it more difficult for them to be chosen by consumers in these times. However, the growth will be evident over the next few years, and it should not be ruled out that at some point its sales will be the majority in the market. Although for that we will have to wait a few years yet.
