The iPhone is a box of surprises in terms of settings and configurations. It always happens that novelties are introduced, but not all of them are mentioned. And one of them is most curious, because at the touch of a button, the phone will pollute less. How is this possible?
CO2 emissions are a problem. And a good part of them is due to the generation of energy from fossil fuels. To charge our iPhone, electricity is needed, and with the encouragement that these phones feed more pollution, Apple quietly implemented a setting that turns out to be most curious.
The iPhone knows when less CO2 is emitted
In iOS 16.1, those from Cupertino decided to incorporate a function called Clean Energy Charging. is (for now) only available in the United Statesand its main objective is that our iPhone begins to charge its battery when, in the area in which we are located, renewable energy sources or that do not emit CO2 are used.
But how does the iPhone know when it is less polluted? The truth is that, depending on our location, the iPhone carries out a tracking of energy productiondepending on the time and place. When it is detected that the plants produce non-polluting energy, the phone begins to charge.
From Apple itself they explain that this will not work if we are always changing locations, and we do not have the optimized charging system for the battery. This is because the phone needs to collect data for a while, in order to know the status of energy production.
What happens when we need to charge the iPhone and at that moment there are no renewable sources that produce energy? A notification will appear indicating that the phone will start charging when the conditions are met. But if we can’t wait, a button will appear that we can press to start the load.
How this setting is activated
To activate this functionality, you have to go to Settings > Battery > Battery health. Here we will see a list of items and options:
- maximum battery capacity
- Peak Throughput Capability
- optimized charging
- Charge with clean energy
The option for our iPhone to be charged with energy that does not emit CO2 is activated in the last section mentioned above. You just have to press the switch, and leave the option marked in green. Let’s remember that it is only available for iPhones from the US, so if we try to do it on an iPhone from another country, for example, from Spain, the option will not appear.
In addition to this, certain localization and location parameters must also be activated, so that the iPhone can receive the data of non-polluting energy production. And there are three more options that we have to activate, but in this case, they are privacy:
- Settings > Privacy and security > Location services. We turn on location services.
- Settings> Privacy and security> System services. We turn them on.
- Settings > Privacy and security > System services > Important places. We activate this option.
