The 60-second ad consisted almost entirely of a color QR code that bounced from side to side like the old-fashioned DVD screen saver. Scanning it with a cell phone camera, the code took viewers to Coinbase’s promotional website, which was offering a limited-time promotion of free $15 in Bitcoin for new signups plus a $3 million raffle.
New customers had until February 15 to get the $15 promotion. The influx of visitors was so massive that the app was inactive for several hours.
