The story of Tesla in Mexico it will grow much more. We will no longer only talk about the brand selling its cars in Mexico. Now we will also talk about their manufacture in our territory. Elon Musk, co-founder of Tesla, confirmed during the investors day that after all the state of Nuevo León, Mexico, would be chosen to build Gigafactory number 5.
This plant will be key to the development of Tesla in the future and it is that in the first place it will not only be one of the largest and most advanced they have, but it will also be in charge of producing the brand’s new access model, a compact sedan that has as its goal to drive Tesla’s sales to such a level that for 2030 can reach the figure of 20 million cars sold.
Said model is said to bear the name of Tesla Model 2, maintaining minimalist design features and with the same technological level as the other models in the range, but with a little less power and space to fit into a more accessible segment. So far it is only rumored that it will be in 2024 or 2025 when this vehicle is fully known.
Likewise, it is expected that from the construction to the operation and maintenance of the plant, it will generate close to 35,000 new jobs in the area and in different states of the country. Although neither Musk nor the other executives of the brand confirmed the amount to invest, it is said that it will be about 5,000 million dollars only in the first stage of operation.
Regarding Tesla in Mexico, the brand does not only want to produce cars here. Another great attraction of our country is the lithium deposit found in Sonora, for which Musk himself confirmed that he is interested in exploiting this material, even willing to exchange machinery and knowledge in order to have priority over the mineral. They also plan to develop components for the aerospace industry and even work on technological development in other entities of Mexico.
The start of operations of the plant does not yet have a specific date, but it is intended to be achieved as quickly as in other countries where it only took a year to build the entire complex and start production. So by mid-2024 we could be talking about an official opening.
