An improvement that will make transferring those recordings in 4K and ProRes to our Mac much easier, for example, and that will interest, and a lot, the most professional users. Higher transfer speed than will further distinguish the Pro models from the entry-level iPhone 15.
Up to 40 Gbps transfer speed
On his Twitter account, the renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo affirms that the implementation of USB-C continues to advance, and that it will reach the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It also affirms that in the iPhones of the Pro range the change will even bring a substantial improvement in speed.
According to the analyst, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will retain the speed of USB 2.0, the same as with the Lightning connector that reaches 480 Mbps. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will reach the speed of USB 3.2 or that of Thunderbolt 3. This translates into speeds between 20 Gbps achieved by USB or 40 Gbps achieved by Thunderbolt.
“This specification upgrade and new trend will drive Apple ecosystem demand for high-speed transfer chips and imitation of the competition (almost all Android phones currently only support USB 2.0), and it is also conducive to growth High Speed Transfer Integrated Circuit Design Industry”.
The distinction between the two speeds for the different models makes a lot of sense. In addition to allowing Apple to keep costs down for entry-level models, the truth is that the use of the cable to pass information from the iPhone has been progressively decreasing in favor of the cloud or wireless transfers.
One of the few exceptions to this trend is in those iPhones that we use to record video at maximum resolution or quality and take the best photos in ProRAW. Some iPhones that, due to the nature of their cameras, are almost always from the Pro range. Thus, the iPhones with the best cameras, the ones that we can use to produce video or photography professionally, are those equipped with the highest transfer speed, makes quite a bit of sense.
Although for now we are talking about rumors and we must be aware that Apple plans can change quickly, everything seems to indicate that the iPhone 15 Pro of 2023 will be very, very interesting phones. Some iPhones that, according to the usual calendar, are now in full development to, during the first months of 2023, close the design and start with the first tests before manufacturing.
