They create filters capable of neutralizing all kinds of viruses and bacteria, including the one that causes the famous Covid-19. Here are the keys to the project.
We have been living with a virus for more than 2 years that has caused millions of deaths worldwide. The pandemic has caused, among many other things, the acceleration of technological projects related to disease prevention, hygiene and, of course, creating solutions to prevent contagion. After this time, they are beginning to obtain the fruits of the multi-million dollar investments that have been taking place.
Masks have been one of the most outstanding elements in terms of protection. The Covid-19 has been able to be, in a certain way, controlled, thanks to the use of these essential goods. All masks, however, are not the Holy Grail either, since not all have the necessary level of filtration to neutralize the passage of the coronavirus. This, however, could end soon thanks to the discovery of new photothermal filters.
It is a technology that stands out, above all, for block the pathogen with great effectiveness. According to information provided by the Inquirer portal, this new technology has been discovered by a team of researchers from the Korean Energy Research Institute, which is located in South Korea. Let’s see, therefore, how this new technology works and, of course, why it is a solution capable of being effective against SARS-CoV-2.
New photothermal filters to neutralize the Covid-19 virus
These new filters have been created from those known as HEPA, a solution present in multiple household appliances, especially those that aim to improve air quality. Thanks to the incorporation of this type of technology, it manages to eliminate up to 99.9% of viruses that try to go through the different layers of this kind of special masks. It turns out to be, therefore, a most effective technology.
Well, how is its curious operation? Apparently, when HEPA photothermal filters are irradiated with light emitting diodes in the visible part of the product, which is of no benefit or harm to humans, viral and bacterial cells succumb to exposure. Yes indeed, a heat source of about 60 degrees centigrade should be supplied to act accordingly. This, therefore, would limit, in a certain way, the standardization of this technology.
According to the words of Yoo Seung-hwan, the greatest exponent of this research project, subjecting the viral particles to this exposure causes it to be a alternative completely free of harmful substances. Now, after the study has been carried out, it seems that the difficult thing will be to find a way to install the product in conventional masks at a certain price.
It is expected that these types of products may be present on the market in the future. however, everything suggests that its price will not be cheap. However, it is an alternative that can be designed, above all, for very specific uses, that is, those in which there is clear exposure to the virus. Could hospitals be the first establishments to have a technology of these characteristics?
