Little by little the PS5 Slim, the unofficial name of the new version of PS5, begins to reach users… and YouTubers. David2D has taken apart a PS5 Slim and put it through an 8-hour stress test. The results are good, but in terms of performance it does not improve the current model: it heats up and consumes slightly more.
The new PS5 Slim will replace the current model, which is no longer manufactured, although it will continue to be sold until stock runs out. The advantages of the PS5 Slim, which Sony continues to simply call PS5, is that it is smaller, weighs less, and has 180 GB more space. Performance is the same as the current model.
PS5 Slim has 30% less volume, meaning there is less empty interior space to cool. That’s why Sony has had to change the entire cooling system. Let’s see it.
New PS5 Slim: temperature and consumption
As shown in the video that we are going to see below, the new PS5 Slim console has two aluminum heatsinks, and five heat pipes or copper heat pipes. It continues to use liquid metal for cooling, which has caused unjustified controversy.
On the other hand It has a heatsink and an extra pipe, and the 19-blade main fan is larger than the previous model. Luckily, the more sophisticated cooling system, necessary as there is less free interior space, does not increase noise. It is even less noisy: 43 compared to 44 dB for the current model.
From what it looks like from the outside, as Dave2D explains, The SoC, or system that contains the CPU and GPU, is the same as in the standard PS5so the performance is identical.
After subjecting the PS5 Slim to a stress test for 8 hours in a row, that is, making it run games non-stop during that time, it has shown temperatures literally higher than the standard model:
As we see, the current version heats up between 60 and 63 degrees Celsius, and the PS5 Slim, between 62 and 64 degrees Celsius.
It is a small difference, which does not negatively affect the console, since It is hardware that heats up very little.. Many powerful gaming PCs reach 90 degrees Celsius. That is why large boxes are used for better cooling. But it is still a disadvantage, although understandable as it has 30% less volume, while maintaining power. In this video you can see it:
What is more surprising is that the PS5 Slim also has a slightly higher consumption than the standard PS5. In the game Death Stranding consumes 5 W more, and in Astro’s Playroom, 2 W more. The exception is Spider-man 2where it consumes 6 W less.
It is an insignificant difference, but it breaks with the trend of the models Slim from Sony, which have always consumed less.
The conclusion we can draw from The PS5 Slim stress test is that anyone looking for lower consumption and heat will not find it. These are minor differences, but there are no advantages here. What users of the new version of PS5 will gain is a smaller size, and more storage space, at the same price.
