It is one of the great integrations of hardware and software of which Apple boasts, and it is true that when they are right you have to give it to them: it is incredible. It works very well, it has no latency and its modes of use are very useful. In short, “it just works”.
Do you need a support? here are four
It only has one problem: how do we hold the iPhone? The ideal would be to purchase the Belkin support, which is priced at 34.95 euros. In case we can’t, don’t want to, or don’t have time to do it, there are several alternativessome quite particular, that will help us get out of trouble.
Peter’s tweezers
I have decided to name this invention “Pedro’s tweezers”. For those who don’t know who I’m talking about, it’s Pedro Aznar, partner and director of applesphere. It turns out that when Apple announced Continuity Camera, the internet went crazy looking for ways to hold the iPhone in a position similar to your Mac’s webcam. Many solutions appeared, but the award for the most original (and the best fitting) went to undoubtedly the invention of Pedro Aznar.
With a bag used to store frozen foods and two clothes pegs, he managed to put together a functional and visually pleasing system. It is true that if a somewhat more discreet tweezers had been used, it would have been better, but that was not the point of the invention. What was wanted was something functional, that anyone could ride at home and that they did not have to buy anything. It would never have occurred to me, and the truth is that it is quite a result.
Javier Lacort’s replica
When my colleague Javier Lacort saw the invention I just told you about, he decided to print it in 3D an adapter so you can use Continuity Camera with your iPhone “Because he almost had a heart attack when he saw what his boss had proposed.” Doesn’t deny its functionality, I just wanted something more aesthetic.
Your solution is somewhat simpler and more practical, but only for those lucky ones who have a 3D printer at home, know someone who does or know of an establishment that offers this service. It consists of an adapter that allows a charger with MagSafe technology to be attached to the top frame of a MacBook. This charger, thanks to its magnetic properties, allows you to fix an iPhone 12 or later and leave it with the rear camera pointing towards us. This way Continuity Camera will work perfectly.
The best alternative (and the most expensive)
HoverBar Duo for iPhone. That’s what this invention is called. It consists of a stand that allows you to keep your iPhone at an adjustable height. The ideal way to use Continuity Camera would be to place it right behind your MacBook and turn it around so that the rear camera is facing you. Not yet available for iPhone in Spainalthough we do enjoy its version for iPad, which we have already reviewed in Applesfera.
A mini tripod could be your best friend
There are plenty of small iPhone tripods with legs that you can adjust to suit your needs. In this case, it is not possible to place the iPhone just above the webcam of your Mac, but it will help you to place it right next to it. What you can do, although it is a bit more cumbersome, is build a mountain of books or boxes behind your MacBook and put it right on top. In this way the result will be practically identical to if you had any of the three previous alternatives. They are available on Amazon Spain for less than 10 euros.
As you can see, there are several ways to enjoy Continuity Camera without the need for Belkin’s famous support. Some are more professional and others more homemade, but the important thing is that they all work and do it well. Be that as it may, the important thing is to make the most of the tools that our devices provide usalthough sometimes you have to use peculiar solutions.
