WhatsApp has already allowed editing of sent messages for some time. But the limit was then one hour. We also see the competing couriers seizing the subject in dispersed order. For example in the latest iOS 16 betas, we saw the delay drop from 15 minutes to just two minutes in the latest versions.
Latest WhatsApp update lets you edit your messages for 2 days
Being able to modify a message, or cancel its sending is a feature that has been desired for a long time by some users. But the idea is far from unanimous. Indeed, some users fear that this possibility will be exploited in the first place by malicious actors.
Indeed, it becomes possible to spam group conversations, for example, more discreetly. A spammer can thus interact discreetly, or naturally – before subsequently modifying his interventions to disseminate, for example, a phishing attempt or malware.
To limit this risk, WhatsApp is also working on a feature allowing group chat administrators to delete any message. However, for the moment, the functionality remains exclusively available in beta, and we do not yet really know what the deployment schedule planned by the firm is.
In addition to WhatsApp and iMessage, other major platforms and social networks are considering letting their users edit their messages. Even if it does involve risks. This is the case of Twitter, which should adopt in the more or less short term an Edit button on tweets to edit posts for a short period of time.
On Twitter, as elsewhere, the functionality could nevertheless be quickly abused to reinforce the effectiveness of the crypto scam campaigns that abound on Elon Musk’s favorite social network.
