Apple has just unveiled the iPad 10, but the Apple brand is keeping its previous iPad 9, which becomes its entry-level. For a difference of 150 euros, how much more is this new iPad worth than its predecessor?
Presented alongside an iPad Pro M2 and an Apple TV 4K 2022, Apple’s new iPad 10 is full of new features, but the tablet receives a nice price increase starting at 589 euros. However, the iPad 9 remains in the catalog also at 439 euros. A difference of 150 euros that could make you want to fall for one or the other. To find your way around, here is a small summary of the notable differences.
Design and screen
The biggest news is here. Already, it may seem futile, but the iPad 10 has much more joie de vivre than its esteemed predecessor. We go from a choice between gray and silver to silver, pink, yellow or blue. Still on aesthetics, the new iPad’s bezels have been reduced considerably, especially at the top and bottom when you hold it vertically. Judge instead:

By the way, the screen was therefore able to take a little more ease. It goes from 10.2 inches to 10.9 inches and gains a few pixels in the trip. We go from 2160 x1620 pixels to 2360 x1640 pixels, while maintaining the 264 dpi and the brightness of 500 cd / m². Not necessarily enough to justify the price difference for the moment.
One thing that may further justify it is the long-awaited switch to USB-C. For 150 euros more, you have the assurance of an iPad which will correspond to the new European standard and therefore which will undoubtedly be able to integrate more accessories in the future. Only concern: if you want to use an Apple Pencil, you will have to buy a 10 euro adapter with it to be able to switch it from Lightning to USB-C.
As long as we are talking about accessories, let’s also mention the new Magic Keyboard which is at the same time Folio and also includes a trackpad. The iPad 9 will not be able to use it a priori. If you want to use your iPad as a 2-in-1 PC, the iPad 10 will therefore be more practical, both thanks to its trackpad, but also with the ease of finding a charger if you have forgotten yours.
Last important point concerning the design: as we have said, the borders are less thick and by the way, the central button which was used for Touch ID therefore had to disappear. Never mind, Touch ID has moved to the power button at the top of the device. Not enough to fundamentally change your use, but avoiding having to lower your finger to the bottom of the screen to unlock the iPad can be a little more comfortable.
Power and Connectivity
It’s not just on the outside that the new iPad brings changes to justify the price difference. Starting with the A14 Bionic chip, 20% more powerful in CPU and 10% in GPU than the A13 of the iPad 9. In terms of connectivity, it also opens the doors to 5G and Wi-Fi 6 and even Bluetooth 5.2. Again, the assurance of having an iPad that lasts the years better than its predecessor.
Other elements of the data sheet reinforce the impression that Apple justifies, this time, the price difference with the old model. We think for example of the rear camera, now capable of shooting in 4K with its 12 megapixels, or of the two speakers located in the landscape position.
Summary: for 150 euros difference, Apple did not skimp
If we sum up, the iPad 10 brings a lot of new features, which will totally justify you going for the extra 150 euros or so to get your hands on it instead of the iPad 9. This is especially the case if you hate them borders too presentif you want an iPad that lasts a little longer thanks to USB-C, but also to the Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. Finally, anyone who plans to use it for work will be sensitive to the presence of a trackpad on the keyboard of the iPad 10.
On the other hand, if none of these arguments make you vibrate, then you have no reason to fall for the iPad 10. Turn to an iPad 9 and save the difference between the two.
