Copying files would have slowed down in Windows 11 2022 Update
If you’ve noticed that copying large files locally or from a remote computer via SMB is slower than usual in Windows 11 version 11 22H2, you’re not alone. Microsoft is currently investigating slower SMB read performance for large files in Windows 11 version 22H2as well as slower speeds for local copies.
“A large file (several GB) could see up to 40% less performance over SMB when copying down (read)”explained Ned Pyle, senior program manager in the Windows Server engineering group. However, the Microsoft employee added that “the problem is not really in the SMB code”, although this is the most likely scenario in which it can be noticed.
Microsoft is currently working on a permanent fix for these slower copy speed issues. There is currently no solution for people experiencing slow speeds when copying local files though users who copy files from a remote PC via SMB can use robocopy or xcopy with the /J parameter (unbuffered IO) as a workaround.
There is currently no time frame for a fix, although Pyle said that is working with another team to fully understand the issue. Last week, Microsoft acknowledged a compatibility issue with some printer drivers and version 22H2 of Windows 11, and the company has placed an update hold until the compatibility issue is fixed.
