As expected during the iPhone 14 keynote, Apple has rolled out all-new software updates for the iPhone and iPad. Baptized iOS 16, it brings its share of new features, improvements and corrections, both in terms of the operating system itself and the company’s native applications. It’s not a revolution, but a nice evolution with, as always, this attention to detail that characterizes Apple.
The big new features of iOS 16
Presented with great fanfare during WWDC22, iOS 16 displays a large number of changes. But if only two were to be retained, it would probably be the personalized lock screen on the iPhone as well as the modification/cancellation of the sending of iMessages. The first allows you to use the famous “lockscreen” with smarter widgets and wallpapers (including depth management). As for the second, it finally allows users to edit and cancel messages already sent via iMessage instant messaging.
The 10 other novelties not to be missed
Outraged editing/deleting iMessages and lock screen, iOS contains more than 240 new features that you will find after downloading the update for free. The 10 most significant are certainly the following:
- Passkeys which allows login without a password
- Landscape Face ID
- isolation mode
- The ability to edit or delete an iMessage
- Real-time captions on FaceTime
- The new Game Center
- The Shared Photo Stream
- The ability to extract a subject from a photo with one click (easy cropping)
- The translation of the text via the camera
iOS 16 Compatibility
The new major version of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 is therefore available, but for which devices? Here’s the full list of iPhones eligible for iOS 16, and those that have been shelved.
Unsupported devices
The incompatible models this year are numerous with the iPhone SE 2016, the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 7. As a reminder, Apple is not doing this to encourage you to renew your iPhone (well maybe a little), but the Californian giant made this decision above all for the user experience. Before listing the iPhones that will be eligible, Apple is testing the new major update on all iPhones that had access to iOS 15. If the latest version of iOS generates too many slowdowns, crashes or freezes, the device is immediately removed from the list of eligible iPhones.
