TikTok’s magic number
According to Bytedance, upon reaching 60 minutes of screen time per day, the platform will ask teens to enter an access code to continue enjoying the contentwhich will force them to make an active decision to extend that time.
For people in our experience under the age of 13, the daily screen time limit will also be set at 60 minutes, and a parent or guardian will need to set or enter an existing passcode to enable 30 minutes of additional screen time.
Besides, Parents will have access to a setting to set a time to mute notifications from their teens. Currently, accounts ages 13-15 don’t get push notifications starting at 9:00 pm and accounts ages 16-17 have push notifications disabled starting at 10:00 pm
The new policy is expected enters into force from the next weeks automatically. For the 60-minute daily limit, the company relied on current academic research from experts at the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Along with this update, TikTok has been in the news in recent days due to the request from the United States and the countries of the European Union to prohibit the installation of the app on official devicesdue to national security concerns about the risks associated with the use of the app of Chinese origin.
And the restrictions could be tightened, if it is finally approved. the project that aspires to the definitive prohibition of the app in the United Stateswhich is currently being discussed in the Senate.
