iOS 17 allows you to tag your pets just like you would tag people in the Photos app. The option is also available on iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma. Here are the steps to follow.
In 2023, it is increasingly difficult for smartphone manufacturers to impress their users with new software features, as the interfaces, iOS 17 like Android 13 (and soon Android 14) seem accomplished. However, that doesn’t stop them from finding a myriad of small improvements that we hadn’t even thought of.
If you use the Photos application, you have undoubtedly noticed that it is able to recognize your relatives and friends and offer you an album dedicated to each and every one. As announced during WWDC 2023, the Photos app is now able to do the same with your cats and dogs. This new feature is available on iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma.
Great news that will save you from browsing your gallery for hours to find this shot of this spring evening where Compte and Simba fell asleep in the laundry basket like two little angels.
How do I get iOS 17 to recognize my cat or dog?
It works just like tagging your friends or loved ones. Here are the steps to follow :
- Open the Photos app;
- Tap on the Albums tab at the bottom;
- Scroll down to the People, Animals and Places section, and tap the People and Animals square;
- Find a photo of your cat or dog that you want to identify;
- Tap Add name at the top of the screen to insert your pet’s name. There, the application will give you several photos and you can confirm or not whether it is really him or her.
At first, the algorithm will tend to confuse your animal with others similar to it. Of course, the more photos you take of him or her, the easier it will be to identify him or her. You can also give it a little help this way:
- Return to the page of the desired animal. There, tap on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Confirm additional photos;
- iOS 17 will then offer you another selection of photos. You just have to validate or not the correct images to add them to the album.
In the same way that you can designate your favorite people to display at the top of the interface, you can tell Photos that this or that animal is really your little darling. To do this, nothing could be simpler: just click on the little heart next to the animal’s portrait.
