The ad that went viral last weekend achieved an unexpected reach, with hundreds of people likely falling for the scam in hopes of winning an iPhone 13.
Internet promotions from sites of dubious origin can be one of the main hooks for thousands of people to fall for a scam.
Internet scam: Win an iPhone 13!
The hook that the publication made was based on the fact that you only had to pay a minimum of $46 pesos, in order to win a high-end equipment.
Although, the main problem with this was mainly that users had to enter all their bank details, in order to pay the fee.
In addition to paying the minimum amount required, you also had to do bulk tagging on the same post, so it had an impressive reach.
The master scam
Once you “earned” the iPhone 13, you had to enter a website where you entered your card details, in order to pay the $46 pesos.
According to information published by Xataka Móvil, when following the steps of the scam, they did not find information that really led to the prize.
When they tagged you, they sent you a link that redirected you to a survey, when you answered it, with practically anything, the announcement “you have won an iPhone” skipped you.
Later, you were sent to another site called “bestpromotion.gifts” with an accountant, to pay the $46 pesos and get the equipment.
Online fraud always comes
This fraud committed by cybercriminals probably managed to reach thousands of people, and surely more than 1000 paid this amount.
That is why, when interacting with any type of fraud, it is necessary that you take into account all the red flags that may appear.
One of them is when they offer you a cell phone 1000 times less than its price, which is unreal and probably just another scam.
The best thing to do is never send any type of information, nor pay attention to sweepstakes or contests that sound “too real, to be true”.
