Certain films have left their mark on the history of pop culture. The production of a nugget, however, relies on a fragile balance that is often unknown to the general public. From casting to script choices, through enmities or moments of grace, the destiny of a creation sometimes reveals real surprises. Here are 3 filming secrets on Die Hard: Crystal Trapthe feature film by John McTiernan available on Disney+.
Bruce Willis’ busy schedule
During the filming of crystal trap, Bruce Willis also filmed episodes of Moonlighting. Exhausted by his busy schedule, the actor asked screenwriter Steven E. de Souza to rearrange certain scenes to reduce his workload. Some supporting characters like Ellis and Powell got more screen time and therefore more opportunities to shine
Alan Rickman almost gave up on his role
According to Screenrantthe latter had never acted in a film before Die Hard but only in TV series and in the theater. He had only been in Hollywood for two days when he was offered this role.
However, he was skeptical about the idea of playing an action movie villain to start his career in the seventh art, so much so that he almost refused the offer. His fears were, however, well-founded, because his performance was so excellent that he was long cataloged as the ideal villain for many years.
Shakespeare inspired the director
According to The Independentthe fact that all the events of Crystal Trap take place in a single night comes from a choice by John McTiernan who was inspired by the British author. Our colleagues underline:
McTiernan had the idea to change the script so that all the action took place in a single night, after reading Shakespeare’s classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream, ensuring that the story conformed to the Aristotle’s classic principles of dramatic unity, as described in his work Poetics.
This format is perfectly suited to this feature film which also sometimes gives us the impression of spending Christmas Eve with the characters behind closed doors.
