Apple TV+ has revealed a first look at “Government Cheese,” with acclaimed actor David Oyelowo not only in the lead role but also serving as executive producer. The series, consisting of 10 episodes, is scheduled to premiere globally on April 16, 2025 on the platform, with the first four episodes available immediately, followed by weekly broadcasts every Wednesday until May 28, 2025.

The story begins with Hampton Chambers (Oyelowo) returning home after a stint in prison, to discover that his family, led by his wife Astoria (Missick) and their sons Einstein (Ellison) and Harrison (Di’Allo Winston), transformed into an unconventional unit during his absence. His return introduces unexpected troubles into their already unique way of life.

Alongside Oyelowo, the series benefits from a quality cast including Simone Missick, Jahi Di’Allo Winston and Evan Ellison. Created by Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr, “Government Cheese” is set in the San Fernando Valley in 1969, presenting a surreal vision of family life where the Chambers family pursues their most ambitious dreams with a touch of supernatural naivety.

There Apple series also features actors like Bokeem Woodbine, Jeremy Bobb, Louis Cancelmi, Julien Heron, Djilali Rez-Kallah, Louis Ferreira, Thomas Beaudoin, Kyle Mac, with John Ortiz and Adam Beach making appearances.

“Government Cheese” is a production of Apple Studios and MACRO Television Studios. Hunter and Carr not only serve as writers and executive producers, but also co-showrunners. Hunter also steps behind the camera, directing the series. Oyelowo’s executive producer role is under his banner Yoruba Saxon. Other executive producers include Charles D. King and Marta Fernandez of MACRO Television Studiosand Ali Brown of Ventureland. Apple’s next comedy series will join similar programs like The Afterparty.
