ipad classic iconAccording to Bloomberg’s very well-informed Mark Gurman, Apple plans to launch its first foldable device in 2028, described as “a large iPad that unfolds to the size of two iPad Pros side by side.” To stand out, and revive sales which are starting to decline on historical models, the firm has planned several notable developments.

A foldable iPad

A design without visible creases

The first point is that the Cupertino company is actively working to avoid creases on the screen, a major challenge in the current industry. Although the latest models feature a barely noticeable crease, complete removal remains uncertain, a hurdle that even foldable smartphone pioneer Samsung has yet to overcome. According to internal sources, Apple would have even conditioned the release of such a product on this “detail”.

A large screen

The other differentiating element concerns the size of the screen. Once unfolded, the useful surface area would measure approximately 20 inchesmade from a single piece of glass, providing a fluid and immersive visual experience. This model would be oriented towards a premium useintended for users looking for a powerful and transportable device. We imagine that Apple would target developers, video editors, 3D designers and other architects, with large wallets and a strong appetite for large panels.

A hybrid system

But the highlight would be the operating system. OUR American colleague estimates that the device will work well under iPadOS but with the ability to run macOS appsthanks to future software developments that will arrive in the meantime. This could make this foldable iPad more versatile than ever, especially since the hardware architecture is now the same between iPads and Macs, especially those that share Mx chips.

A foldable iPhone?

As for the iPhone Fold (foldable), the first model could be released as early as 2026, which contradicts Gurman’s assertion regarding the iPad Fold which is described in his Sunday letter as “the first foldable device coming in 2028”.

One thing is certain, a foldable device is highly anticipated by customers, more than a Vision Pro…
