DIGI officially announces itself as the 4th telecom operator in Belgium. Already established in Spain and Italy, the operator of Romanian origin arrives with the ambition of offering quality at a low price. Good news for consumers even if the hardest part is yet to come for this new market player.
DIGI: the Belgian Free
The Belgian telecommunications market welcomes a new national operator, Digiwhich positions itself as an alternative to the giants Proximus, Orange and Telenet. Originally from Romania, Digi has already made a name for itself in Spain and Italy. Digi officially becomes the 4th telephone operator in Belgium and intends to imitate Free in France.
Digi is targeting mobile coverage of 99% by 2030, with innovative offers for individuals and businesses. While waiting for its own network, it will use that of Proximus, the current market leader. The company has already paid more than 114 million euros two years ago to acquire a frequency band from BIPT. A significant first step in a market that is more than difficult to shake up.
At Digi, we do things differently. We control our own costs, with our own technicians, our own call center. So we control our platform from start to finish and this is what allows us to offer much more attractive prices for Belgian consumers.$
Digi, which is committed to being the cheapest operator in the country, offers a mobile offer at €5/month. For this price, customers benefit from 15 GB of mobile data as well as unlimited calls and SMS. The package can be increased at the rate of €0.60/additional gigabyte. Currently, the cheapest package among the competition is €7/month. Note that only 4G is available at Digi for the moment, with 5G expected to arrive in 2025 according to its CEO.
Digi also offers a standard fixed offer at €10/month, offering a maximum speed of 500 Mbps up and down. Two other options are available, including one at €20/month allowing you to reach up to 10 Gbps. When it comes to fiber optics, Digi prefers to develop its own infrastructure rather than partner with its competitors. At the moment, only 100,000 households are eligible, but the goal is to reach two million eligible households within five years.
