A few weeks ago, Disney+ and Canal+ announced the imminent end of their agreement, dating from 2019. After five years of walking together, hand in hand, Disney+ and Canal+ are separating. Disney+ is not content with withdrawing from Canal+’s cinema bouquet, depriving subscribers of its programs, since the big-eared company is, at the same time, winning the exclusivity of the Oscars ceremony. A hard blow for Canal+ which had the exclusivity for three decades, all the same.

While the end of the agreement between Disney+ and Canal+ is set for December 31, 2024, Mickey’s firm has already found a new lover. From January 2, 2025, Disney+ and Orange will spin the perfect love story in France. What does this mean for the French operator’s customers?

Disney+ and Orange, a snub to the media chronology?

From January 2, 2025, Orange TV customers will be able to enjoy Disney thematic channels such as Disney Channel and National Geographic. But that’s not all: they will be able to subscribe to Disney+ with advantageous conditions. Enough to simplify the lives of users.

Thanks to this “marriage”, Orange will also be able to offer Disney films on its VOD service only four months after their release. So, Moana 2 And Mufusa will be available for purchase and rental from next April. The end of the agreement between Canal+ and Disney+ was worrying because without a distributor in France, the big-eared firm would have had to wait 17 months to broadcast its films on its platform because of the media chronology.

Remember that media chronology is a real thorn in the side of streaming platforms. With a new distributor in our green lands, Disney+ avoids making users wait more than a year and a half. A good strategy to increasingly conquer the French market. In this sense, Les Echos recently revealed that Disney intended to play the game of media chronology by quadrupling its investments in French cinema. They would increase from 13 to 55 million euros annually over the next three years. It remains to be seen whether this will be enough to turn everything around. The new media timeline is currently being negotiated and the verdict is expected in February 2025.
