When DJI launched the Air 3 last summer, the choice of a sensor smaller than that of the Air 2S surprised the community. Although the performance was there (better dynamic range and better performance in low light), some users regretted this technical choice. Good news, DJI has heard them. It corrects the situation with the Air 3S by integrating an all-new 50-megapixel one-inch sensorwhich promises the best of both worlds.

It is accompanied by a brighter 24mm wide-angle lens (f/1.8) and a Lidar sensor, a first for the Air range. The latter also improves the detection of obstacles in low light, an appreciable addition when the flight extends beyond sunset – even if night flights remain prohibited without special authorization in France.

The Air 3S also retains the advantages that made its predecessor successful. : dual lens with 70mm f/2.8 telephoto lens, record battery life of 46 minutes (announced), OccuSync 4 transmission and 360-degree obstacle detection up to 18 meters. All in a compact format of 724 grams which places it in category C1 of European regulations.

Top image quality

The great novelty of this model is therefore its new 1” sensor. Let’s break the suspense right away: it works wonders. The photos benefit from better definition. You can shoot in 50 megapixels for more details or in 12.5 megapixels thanks to the pixel binning for better dynamic range. The colors are more accurate, particularly for the greens of the vegetation which sometimes posed a problem on the Air 3. Digital noise is better controlled, even if it remains visible in certain conditions.

DJI achieves flawless 4K video with a splendid image that benefits from a dynamic range of 14 stops. The ability to shoot at up to 120 frames per second (compared to 100 on the Air 3) allows for smoother slow motion, while 10-bit recording in HLG or D-Log M offers more latitude in post-production. The speed can go up to 150 Mbps to preserve details. A treat.

A very versatile drone…

The dual lens is the other attraction of the DJI Air 3S. The 24mm allows you to capture vast landscapes with an excellent level of detail, while the 70 mm telephoto lens allows you to get closer to subjects without scaring them – a real plus for wildlife photography or for filming restricted access areas. This configuration also opens up interesting creative possibilities, particularly for compression effects in video when rotating around a subject.

The very wide shutter speed range (from 8 seconds to 1/16000th) allows you to play with light, whether to create artistic blurs in long exposures or to freeze the action. The different shooting modes (burst, bracketing, panorama) complete this creative arsenal for which DJI is renowned.

…and very stable

In flight, the DJI Air 3S performs admirably. Powerful and stable even in strong winds (up to 43 km/h), it allows perfectly clear long exposures. It thus stands out from lighter drones like the Mini 4 Pro. Its maximum speed of 68 km/h and its capacity to go up or down at 36 km/h make it the ideal tool for shooting in difficult conditions (at sea or in the mountains for example).

The 360-degree obstacle detection works effectively, although electrical wires and thin branches remain difficult to spot. The new Lidar further improves safety in low light: for example, it allows the drone to be returned safely when night begins to fall.

Effective smart functions

DJI drones are also a whole host of shooting modes and algorithms that are really well designed. The DJI Air 3S necessarily inherits this know-how.

The system FocusTrack with ActiveTrack 5.0 improves intelligent topic tracking. The drone automatically identifies potential subjects and allows their trajectory to be drawn. The mode Spotlight keeps the subject framed while you fly freely, while the Point of Interest (POI) ensures perfect orbits. L’Hyperlapse produces dynamic timelapses, while the mode Waypoints will satisfy more experienced users with its programmable routes.

DJI doesn’t forget beginners and offers automated modes MasterShots And QuickShots. They make it easy to create elaborate sequences with a single click. A good way to exploit the potential of the drone from the start of the experience, before gaining confidence and know-how.

Comfortable autonomy

With 35 to 40 minutes of effective flight depending on conditionsthe Air 3S allows generous flight sessions. This is twice as much as a Mini 4 Pro and more than sufficient for most uses. The 42 GB internal memory allows you to record around 30 minutes of 4K60p video without a memory card, a good point for the distracted.

The Fly More pack with its two additional batteries remains recommended for intensive sessions or timelapses. Compatible with 65W or 100W Power Delivery chargers, it allows you to recharge several batteries simultaneously. But it also considerably increases the bill. You will therefore need to carefully identify your needs.

What we liked least about the DJI Air 3S

Long charging time

Although it is durable, the DJI Air 3S takes a long time to regain its energy. Allow at least 1 hour 20 minutes to recharge a batteryeven with a powerful 100W charger. It’s a long time, especially since DJI does not provide a charger in the pack. The battery also gradually discharges when not in use (80% after 3 days), which requires you to plan your flight session in advance.

The pack’s charging base Fly More allows you to recharge several batteries simultaneously, but again, you will need to invest in a suitable charger. A constraint that could have been avoided with an included charger.

A price that climbs quickly

From 1,099 euros in basic version with the RC-N3 remote control (which requires a smartphone), the bill is steep. Above all, DJI charges its packs with different accessories at a high price. The Fly More pack is priced at 1,399 euros: it includes two batteries, ND filters and a bag. The version with RC2 screen remote control (our test version) rises to 1,599 euros.

To all this we must also add the cost of a suitable charger and possibly DJI Care Refresh insurance to cover accidents (€99 per replacement, €359 in the event of loss). A substantial investment which places the Air 3S at the top of the basket. A little too high even considering the improvements made compared to the Air 3.

Limited improvements

If the new main sensor brings a real plus in photo and video, the developments remain modest compared to the Air 3. Lidar is useful but its use is limited by the night flight ban, and the telephoto lens retains its 1/1.3 inch sensor (a choice dictated by size and weight constraints according to DJI).

Owners of an Air 3 can therefore skip this update, as the gains in image quality are not substantial enough to justify such a significant investment.

Our opinion on the DJI Air 3S

The Air 3S confirms DJI’s position as the undisputed leader in consumer drones. This update corrects the main flaw of the Air 3 with its new one-inch sensor, which significantly improves image quality while retaining the excellent dynamic range of its predecessor.

The drone also retains all the qualities that made the Air 3 a success: versatile dual lens, excellent stability even in strong winds, generous autonomy and well-thought-out intelligent functions. The addition of Lidar further enhances safety in low light conditions.

The drone remains an excellent choice for demanding content creators looking for a versatile and high-performance device. Its exemplary stability and wind resistance also make it a valuable tool for shooting in difficult conditions, while its dual lens opens up numerous creative possibilities.

Owners of an Air 3 can skip this update, as the improvements are not substantial enough to justify the change. On the other hand, for those looking to upgrade or replace an older model, the Air 3S currently represents the best in its category.

There remains the question of price, which rises quickly when you add the essential accessories (additional batteries, suitable charger, ND filters). It is therefore important to clearly identify your needs before exchanging an organ.
