For once the European Union is in agreement with Apple. From tomorrow, any smartphone sold in Europe will no longer have a charger in the box. An “ecological” novelty invented by Apple four years ago and which suits the brands well.
A smartphone without a charger, the new standard
Starting Saturday, December 28, a European decree requires a universal USB-C charger for all smartphones imported or sold in the European Union. This is why Apple is stopping the marketing of the iPhone 14 and SE. This measure aims to harmonize standards, simplify the lives of consumers, and above all reduce electronic waste linked to unused accessories.
The text also requires that consumers can purchase a smartphone without a charger included. If this practice is part of an ecological logic, it also presents logistical advantages for manufacturers. By eliminating load blocks, they reduce the size of packaging, thus optimizing transport and limiting storage costs.
This trend, although ecological, also generates additional revenue for brands. Chargers, sold separately, are often offered at high prices. For example, an Apple charger costs 25 euros, while that of Samsung costs 15 euros, transforming this change into an economic opportunity.
Fortunately, third-party sellers like Anker are there to provide us with quality and more affordable alternatives. THE Nano 3 priced at €17.99 is the perfect example. Promotions are regularly effective, allowing prices to be reduced even further.
Apple, precursor and leader
Since October 2020, Apple has stopped including chargers with its iPhones, justifying this decision for environmental reasons. This approach paved the way for other manufacturers like Samsung and Xiaomi, reinforcing a practice that is now widespread and approved by the European Union.
However, this transition continues to spark debate, with some consumers regretting an additional expense for an accessory that is nevertheless essential. Whatever happens, the European Union will no longer go back on its decision, the charger in the smartphone box is officially finished in 2025.
