Samsung’s strategy in the high-end smartphone market already relies heavily on artificial intelligence. Thanks to Galaxy AI, a mix of internally developed AI features and new features based on Google technologies, Samsung was able to boost its sales. But at the same time, the Korean giant also continues to develop Gauss, a language model comparable to ChatGPT, Gemini or even Llama.

If you don’t hear about this AI often, it’s because, at the moment, Gauss is used internally, to improve the productivity of Samsung employees. However, the company has never ruled out the idea of using this technology on the products it markets. But in the meantime, Samsung has just lifted the veil on a new version of its artificial intelligence, during the Samsung Developer Conference Korea 2024.

Samsung already has multimodal AI

Samsung announced the first version of Gauss in 2023 and this week it announces a new generation called Gauss2. If the company does not discuss technical details, it explains that this new AI has better performance, better efficiency and, most importantly, it is a multimodal AI. This means that like competing technologies, Gauss2 is capable of processing text, computer code, but also images.
Gauss2 is available in three versions: a compact version which requires few computing resources, a balanced version which offers a good balance between performance, speed and efficiency, and a “supreme” version which maximizes performance. Depending on the version used, Gauss2 can support 9 to 14 languages.

“Having an internal generative AI model makes it easier to customize to achieve optimal performance for specific goals and applications. Samsung Gauss is already used for various tasks by Samsung employees, taking advantage of its customizable development capabilities”indicates the manufacturer. Among Samsung’s internal AI tools, there is an assistant called code.i, the use of which has reportedly quadrupled in almost a year. The Korean giant also offers an assistant called Samsung Gauss Portal to its employees, which allows them to summarize documents, translate text or even write emails.

A future product?

And as mentioned above, Samsung could later offer this technology to its customers. “Samsung Electronics is committed to developing cutting-edge software, including AI and data analytics, to improve user experiences,” said Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, President, CTO of Device eXperience (DX) Division and Head of Samsung Research. “With three distinct models, Samsung Gauss2 is already boosting our internal productivity, and we plan to integrate it into products to provide higher levels of convenience and customization.” Note also that Samsung does not hide its ambition to improve the Bixby assistant using generative artificial intelligence.

  • Samsung continues to develop Gauss, a technology comparable to ChatGPT that it uses internally to boost productivity
  • Gauss was unveiled in 2023 and this week, the manufacturer presents Gauss2, a new, more efficient version which is also multimodal (capable of managing images)
  • Internally, Samsung already offers a coding assistant and a general assistant capable of summarizing documents or even writing emails to its employees.
  • The manufacturer plans to later offer this technology to its customers.
