Today, Android smartphone manufacturers are trying to extend the life of their devices, providing updates for a longer time. Google and Samsung, for example, offer 7 years of software updates for their latest premium smartphones. But a few years ago, it was common for a high-end smartphone to become obsolete just three years after its release. For example, the Google Pixel 2, released in 2017, stopped receiving security updates in 2020.
But the good news is that, thanks to an alternative to the operating systems provided by the manufacturers, some older models can still benefit from an up-to-date version of Android. This alternative is called LineageOS and recently, it announced LineageOS 22.1, which is a version of its OS based on the Android 15 code. The list of devices compatible with this modified version of Android is long, but it includes very popular models a few years ago, such as the Pixel 2, the Pixel 2 XL, the Pixel 3, the Pixel 3a, the OnePlus 5, or even the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 from Samsung.
Deployment faster than expected
In addition to the fact that it allows you to have a recent version of Android on older smartphones, LineageOS also offers interesting customization experiences. Otherwise, in its announcement, LineageOS indicates that it was able to develop its version based on Android 15 faster than expected. And what’s more, developers were able to adapt LineageOS 22.1 to as many devices as possible more quickly.
