Apple today announced an update to the iPad mini, which now features an A17 Pro chip and supports the company’s AI platform, Apple Intelligence. The seventh-generation tablet maintains its compact 8.3-inch design while offering notable improvements in performance and new features. If you already have an iPad mini 6, there’s no need to rush.

A minor change for the iPad mini 7

According to Applethe integration of the A17 Pro chip improves CPU performance by 30% and GPU performance by 25% compared to the previous generation, equipped with the A15 Bionic chip. An important leap which should satisfy gamers and fans of artificial intelligence. We would obviously have liked an A18 chip, that of the iPhone 15 Pro is already sufficient in 99% of cases.

As expected, the new iPad mini 7 also supports the Apple Pencil Pro, which introduces pressure sensitivity, haptic feedback and gesture controls. Other improvements include support for Wi-Fi 6E, faster USB-C data transfer, and a slightly revised 12MP camera (wide sensor) with e.g. Smart HDR 4.

The big news obviously remains Apple Intelligence, the platform which offers improved writing tools, image generation and improved task automation. The system uses both on-device processing and cloud-based models to balance performance and privacy. The first set of Apple Intelligence features will be available in English in the US this month through a free iPadOS 18.1 software update. We’re expecting it at the end of the month.

With iPadOS 18, the iPad mini 2024 also benefits from Math Notes in the calculator app and makes improvements in environmental sustainability, using 100% recycled materials in its design.

You will notice that it is very difficult to distinguish the iPad mini 7 from the iPad mini 6 visually, Apple having even used the wallpaper from the previous model. The good news is that it now starts at 128GB instead of 64GB, keeping the same price.
