For three months, feedback on the iPhone 16 has been generally positive. However, the new Camera Control button is subject to criticism. To address this feedback, Apple introduced a new option to completely disable the button when the screen is off, to mitigate accidental activations.

iOS 18.2: new Camera Control management option

This year, Apple Intelligence attracted all the attention when the iPhone 16 was released. However, another major new feature also appeared: Camera Control, or “Camera Control” in French. This new button, installed on the right side of the device, allows you to take photos and navigate settings without touching the screen.

Despite this, the community considers this innovation unnecessary and impractical. In addition to its limitation to horizontal use and reserved for right-handed people, the button is sometimes activated by mistake, without the user even touching it. Worse yet, these accidental activations often happen when the iPhone is in a pocket or bag. Fortunately, the brand has corrected this problem with its latest update.

Apple introduced a new feature in iOS 18.2 for iPhone 16 models to prevent accidental camera activations. This innovative option, which is activated in the settings, requires the iPhone screen to be on before the Camera Control will react. It arrives alongside Visual Intelligence, which allows you to have live information about your environment, but only on iPhone 16.

How to enable this feature

  1. Open the app Settings on your iPhone 16.
  2. Scroll down and tap Brightness and display.
  3. Search the section Camera control.
  4. Enable the option Require screen on.

This option is particularly useful for those who find the Camera Control button to be too sensitive and can result in unwanted activations. By enabling this option, you add an extra layer of security to prevent the camera from accidentally opening in your pocket or bag. Between us, some would even like Apple to own up to its mistake and remove this button from the iPhone 17 next year.
