Many people have received an Apple Watch as a gift this holiday season, so they’re experimenting with it. However, there’s one thing they’re unable to change, or aren’t sure if they can, and that’s Apple’s default Activity rings.
These rings show us the minutes of exercise, the total kcal burned, and the hours standing; however, there are people, like me, who prefer other values, whether it be the floors climbed, or the hours of sleep we get. However, can it be changed?
Modify Apple Watch rings
During this time of year, Apple has launched an ad encouraging people to use the watch to achieve their goals, whether it’s to end the year in shape or to start the new one as a resolution, something very common. In it, we can see these features, along with the famous three-color rings, but, as we said, are they always the same?
And yes, Apple allows you to change them, but only internally, that is, set a different goal for each color, but not modify its activity, so if you want, as in my case, to change the hours standing for hours slept or floors climbed, you won’t be able to, and you will need to use other external widgets or simply enter all the statistics for each one.
This is something that, honestly, we don’t understand about Apple, because, with what the device costs, and the amount of metrics it takes, they should let us select the objectives that we want, because possibly climbing 10 floors a day is healthier than standing hours, which count even if we only get up to lower the blinds, so it is not a ring that, personally, I find very useful, since, in addition, we can configure it to notify us if we have been sitting for a long time, to stretch our legs, something that is similar to what this ring is looking for, but that we already have in this way.
- Red ring (movement): Represents the active calories burned throughout the day, i.e., calories expended through non-sedentary activities. You can complete this by walking, climbing stairs, dancing, or any movement that involves physical effort, whether mild or light.
- Green Ring (Exercise): Measures minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity, such as brisk walking, running, swimming, or cycling. The default goal is at least 30 minutes a day, though you can adjust this to suit your preferences. It activates when your heart rate and movement exceed a certain threshold (which Apple considers by default), so just hanging around the house isn’t a good idea.
- Blue Ring (Standing): Indicates the times you stand and move around for at least a minute. To complete it, you need to get up and move around every hour for 12 hours a day (or however many you set). This ring motivates you not to lie on the couch all afternoon.
So, unfortunately, that’s the way it is, and barring an update, we’ll have to settle for the fact that, at least, Apple allows us to modify the lens of these, since not everyone is looking for the same thing.
