In today’s fast-paced technology, skipping two generations may seem crazy, but my experience shows that a good iPhone can last for many years. I’ve never upgraded from one generation to the next, and the reason is simple: I don’t need to (at least not yet).

Like me, many people are mildly tempted to upgrade their iPhone to the latest model. But the truth is, it doesn’t make sense to make such a large investment when the differences between generations are increasingly subtle, especially if you’re not a professional photographer or don’t perform tasks that require a lot of power. Or at least that’s my view.

The difference between my 14 Pro Max and Apple’s future flagship doesn’t seem large enough to justify the investment, the effort… and abandoning a device that remains, in 2025, absolutely outstanding. At least considering the track record of previous years.

This isn’t an article against the iPhone 17. I’m sure it will be, as every year, “the best iPhone ever. ” It will arrive with improvements, innovations, and will be the object of desire for many. But those of us who have already upgraded from recent models, like the iPhone 14 Pro Max, may not notice a significant enough leap.

There’s no single reason to think the iPhone 14 Pro Max is a good device that can last for years to come. There are several.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is still a beast

The first is obvious: it’s still a beast in every respect. The iPhone 14 Pro Max isn’t an “old” or “slow” or “deficient” phone in 2025. Quite the opposite, it’s a true workhorse that handles everything I throw at it (and it’s no small feat) throughout the day.
