iphone 16 iconIf you followed the keynote on September 9, you know that Apple announced that its new iPhone 16s all feature second-generation Ceramic Shield glass, which Apple claims is 50% stronger than the previous generation. The American insurance provider Allstate Protection Plans wanted to know more and put the latest phone through its paces, offering a glimpse of how tough the new 2024 models will be. But he’s not the only one, other specialist YouTubers have tortured the iPhone 16, such as JerryRigEveryThing, MadMatt or TechRax.

The first Drop Test of the iPhone 16

Allstate tested the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the largest iPhone yet at 6.9 inches. The device retains a glass back and front, and while the Ceramic Shield, reinforced with ceramic particles, has been improved for better durability, it remains vulnerable when dropped on concrete.

Using a “DropBot” to simulate six-foot drops, several tests were conducted. During the screen-to-ground drop test, the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s screen cracked and scratches appeared on the titanium frame. Although the device was rendered unusable, the haptic feedback still worked, suggesting that a repair was possible.

When dropped on its back, the rear glass also shattered on first impact, damaging the camera housing. The iPhone remained functional, including the camera, but the glass shards made it risky to use with bare hands.

Since no smartphone with glass has survived Allstate’s DropBot tests, it’s no surprise that the iPhone 16 Pro Max failed. Glass doesn’t hold up well to hard surfaces, making it essential to use protection like AppleCare+ or a case.

Of course, this kind of test is not necessarily representative of everyday use. In addition, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is the largest and heaviest in the range, which automatically makes it the most vulnerable.

Other torture tests

To go further, here are several YouTube videos performing additional resistance tests, as interesting as they are sometimes wacky. For example, we find screen burns, cutter blows, hammer blows, twists and more. The third video focuses on the standard iPhone 16. We have the impression that it resists a little better than the Pro, probably thanks to its reduced mass.

The price of AppleCare+

THE AppleCare+ service for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus costs €199 for two years or €8.99 per month, while for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max it costs €229 (or $199) or €11.99 per month (or $9.99). With AppleCare+, replacing the screen or back glass of the iPhone 16 Pro Max costs €29, and without it is €199. If both sides are damaged, the repair costs €519 (€58 with AppleCare+).
