After battery issues this week, a new bug appears to be affecting some iPhone 16 models, causing random freezes and reboots, according to complaints on Reddit and the Apple support forums. Affected customers have reported that their new iPhones freeze unexpectedly, before restarting unexpectedly. And the worst part is that it can happen very frequently.

A major problem on the new iPhone

Since the launch of the iPhone 16 models in September, this phenomenon has continued to grow. Neither the iOS 18.0.1 update nor the iOS 18.1 update currently in beta has fixed the issue, with users continuing to experience these random reboots even after installing the latest software version offered by Apple.

The bug seems to occur unpredictably, causing the touchscreen to become inactive or very slow to respond before the iPhone restarts on its own. Some users also reported that their iPhone restarted unexpectedly when in Sleep mode. So it’s not the act of handling the phone that makes him delirious.

Some customers who contacted Apple shortly after purchasing the iPhone 16 were able to obtain a replacement device, but the issue reappeared on these new models. Most of the complaints concern the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models, suggesting that only the Pro models could be affected. And it is difficult to assess in what proportions this range is affected.

For most users the bug is sporadic, but some have reported up to 10-20 crashes per day, which is obviously unbearable. In some cases, a clean install without restoring from an iCloud backup appears to have fixed the issue, suggesting it might be iCloud-related. Hopefully it’s software and not hardware.

Among those who fell for the new iPhone 16, who has already suffered unexpected crashes?
