Microsoft has just launched a new application simply called “Windows App”, available today on Mac, iPhone, iPad, web browsers and even Windows PC. An Android version is also available in public preview. This app acts as a hub for streaming a copy of Windows from various sources such as Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop, etc.

A unified app to access Windows everywhere

Tested for almost a year, this unified application offers a customizable home screen, support for multiple displays, as well as USB redirection to use local devices (webcams, storage, printers) as if they were directly connected to the PC in the cloud.

However, the Windows app is currently limited to Microsoft work and school accounts. It’s primarily designed to help existing users of Remote Desktop clients on Windows and other operating systems migrate to the new solution. Microsoft has offered similar apps for connecting remotely to Windows PCs for decades, including Remote Desktop Connection, which is still present in Windows 11.

Towards a 100% Windows in the cloud?

There’s no indication yet that Microsoft plans to support consumer accounts with its new Windows app. However, last year, the company revealed its long-term goal of moving Windows entirely to the cloud to “enable enhanced AI-powered services and full roaming of users’ digital experiences.”

Windows users can download the app from the Microsoft Store. It is also available on the Apple App Store for macOS iOS, iPadOS and VisionOS. As for the Android version, it is now entering public preview. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will eventually offer a general public offering to enjoy Windows anywhere, in the same way that players like Shadow or OVH already offer. In any case, the Redmond firm seems determined to push its cloud strategy even further, and not just on its own devices.
