Netflix continues to innovate by rolling out “Moments,” a new feature that allows subscribers to capture and share their favorite scenes directly from the mobile app. This feature, first available on iOS before arriving soon on other platforms, marks a significant evolution in the social viewing experience.
The principle is simple: while viewing content on a smartphone, users can now save their favorite scenes by tapping on the screen to bring up the “Moments” option. These clips are automatically saved in the “My Netflix” tab and can be easily shared on social networks like Instagram or Facebook. Each capture intelligently includes the program title, episode number and accurate timestamp
This new feature comes at the right time with highly anticipated releases such as season 2 of Squid Game at the end of December 2024. It should allow Netflix to strengthen its community engagement and its dominant position over competitors like Prime Video, Disney+ and Max. The feature could also help alleviate some of the downsides of the block release model, making it easier to discuss specific moments.
In a context where Apple TV+ has also just announced its InSight function to enrich the viewing experience, this innovation from Netflix demonstrates that streaming platforms continue to evolve to respond to new social uses of their content. From there to affirming that Netflix is gradually transforming into a social network, there is only one step.
