Just days before TikTok faces a total ban in the United States, Amazon has launched a last-minute bid to acquire the popular video platform. The news has shaken the tech industry and the business world, although according to sources close to the negotiations, the e-commerce giant’s offer is not being taken seriously by key players in the dispute over TikTok’s future.

The conflict with TikTok dates back to the recent implementation of the “Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” which prevents Chinese-controlled apps from operating in the United States.

Why is the United States banning TikTok?

Although this restriction went into effect in January, former President Donald Trump ordered the Department of Justice not to enforce the regulations for a 75-day grace period, which expires this Saturday, April 5. If a sale agreement has not been reached by then, TikTok could be blocked again in the United States, leaving millions of users without access to the platform.

Given this situation, several interested parties have been submitting proposals to acquire TikTok. Among them are names like Oracle, the artificial intelligence startup Perplexity, and renowned entrepreneurs such as influencer MrBeast, investor Kevin O’Leary, and tycoon Frank McCourt. However, Amazon’s entry into the bidding process was completely unexpected.

Despite Amazon’s interest, many sources involved in the negotiations believe that Jeff Bezos’s company’s proposal is more symbolic than realistic. The US government is cautious about any move that doesn’t guarantee TikTok’s complete disassociation from its parent company, ByteDance, based in China. In fact, one of the options Trump is considering is allowing several US investors, such as Oracle and the investment fund Blackstone, into the company in a deal that wouldn’t involve a full sale, which would raise new questions about the legal viability of this option.

TikTok will continue in Spain

For its part, ByteDance has insisted it has no intention of selling TikTok, although this position could change if the only alternative is to see its app banned in the US. As the deadline approaches, the big question is what decision Trump will make, as he will meet with senior White House officials in the coming hours to assess the available options. The possibility that the former president will grant a further extension, prolonging the uncertainty over TikTok’s fate in the country, remains unclear.

TikTok Lite

Amazon’s potential acquisition of TikTok opens a new scenario in which the platform could be integrated into the e-commerce giant’s ecosystem, with implications for the advertising market and the use of user data. However, it remains to be seen whether the offer is solid enough to be considered in the final stretch of this conflict. With time running out, TikTok’s future remains unknown, and any last-minute move could completely change the app’s course in the United States.
