Bloomberg reports that Sony is working on a new handheld console planned for release in a few years. If this is confirmed, competition with Microsoft and Nintendo, who are also developing portable consoles, promises to be fierce.
A portable PS6, really?
According to BloombergSony is developing a new, fully standalone portable game console. Unlike PlayStation Portal, this console would allow all games to be played locally without the need for a physical console or using the cloud. A sort of future portable PS6.
Currently under development, this console aims to compete directly with the two industry giants, Nintendo and Microsoft. As a reminder, the Nintendo Switch 2 is planned for 2025, while Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, recently confirmed the preparation of a true portable Xbox.
Much like the portable Xbox, the portable PlayStation isn’t expected any time soon. The report indicates that it is under development, which implies a wait of at least several years. Furthermore, it cannot be ruled out that the project could be abandoned partway through and ultimately put aside.
If this project sees the light of day, it would be excellent news for fans of the PS Vita, Sony’s old portable console whose production stopped in March 2019, almost six years ago. For competitors like Valve with its Steam Deck and Asus with its ROG Ally, the situation would, however, be less favorable.
In any case, if PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo all three offer a portable console at the same time, this would mark the return of a market which has lost its luster over the last ten years.
