While Apple has just deployed its first AI features with iOS 18, the Cupertino company is already working on a major overhaul of its voice assistant. According to Bloomberg, a brand new version of Siri based on large language models (LLM) is in development for a release planned for spring 2026.

A more conversational voice assistant

The project, internally nicknamed “LLM Siri”, aims to radically transform Apple’s voice assistant to make it much more natural and capable of maintaining real conversations, like ChatGPT. This new version will rely on advanced AI models developed internally by Apple to interact in a more human way and manage complex tasks.

The revamped Siri will rely on new Apple AI models to interact more humanly and handle tasks in a way closer to ChatGPT and Google Gemini. It will also make expanded use of App Intents, allowing more granular control over third-party apps. The software will also be able to exploit Apple Intelligence features, such as the ability to write and summarize texts.

Apple teams are currently testing this improved version via a separate application on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Ultimately, it will completely replace the current Siri interface. The new Siri will notably be able to better understand the context of requests, access relevant personal data and control third-party applications more precisely thanks to extensive use of “App Intents”.

Gradual deployment from 2025

Apple plans to unveil this major overhaul at its WWDC 2025 conference, likely in June, alongside iOS 19 and macOS 16 (codenames: Luck and Cheer). However, the actual deployment will not take place until several months later, in spring 2026 according to current plans. Until then, Apple will continue to improve Siri gradually. The iOS 18.2 update scheduled for December will already include ChatGPT, and iOS 18.3 will bring new capabilities for understanding personal context and interacting with apps. These developments prepare the ground for the future “LLM Siri”.

This overhaul is part of Apple’s broader strategy to catch up in AI against competitors like OpenAI or Google. The firm particularly emphasizes the protection of privacy as a differentiating argument. As several recent job offers show, Apple is actively looking for experts in conversational AI to carry out this ambitious project which could finally allow Siri to compete with new generation assistants.

We will probably have to wait another 2 years to have a slightly less stupid Siri.
