From the outset, the angle sold by Lucasfilm took us by surprise. As soon as the production of the Star Wars series was announced, Skeleton Crewthis project was in fact presented as being in the vein of the Amblin films of the 80s. To their credit are great classics such as AND the extra-terrestrialor even Back to the future. The launch of this creation on December 3 on Disney+ therefore intrigues us greatly.
An original story?
You can see in the trailer that we haven’t been lied to about the merchandise. This series clearly targets children, but also adults wanting to rediscover the atmosphere they once knew. The pitch presented challenges us:
Skeleton Crew follows the journey of four children who, after a mysterious discovery on their seemingly peaceful planet, find themselves lost in an unknown and dangerous galaxy. While looking for a way home, they will cross paths with Jod Na Nawood.
If the interplanetary aspect was not mentioned, we could clearly be dealing with a scenario worthy of of the Goonies. The release date of Skeleton Crew also owes nothing to chance, and a good part of the episodes should be broadcast in the middle of the Christmas holidays, a good time to introduce toddlers to Star Wars.
Lucasfilm knows how to vary genres in this regard. While series like Andor tackle themes such as intergalactic politics or espionage, the tone seems much lighter in Skeleton Crew and this is undoubtedly what spectators will come to look for on Disney+ after a very trying year 2024.
Disney must catch up after the failure of The Acolyte
Of course, Jon Watts, the showrunner, defended himself during the last D23 conference by affirming that even if the four children are at the heart of the casting (they will be surrounded by the British star Jude Law), it is not a question of ‘a series “for children”. He promises that the plot of this fiction will have certain dark aspects that are difficult to see at the moment. Either way, this statement only whets our curiosity even more.
Disney in any case needs to catch up after the failure of The Acolyte which will not be entitled to a season 2. We can of course discuss the quality of this series, but it is clear that it did not succeed in attracting fans.
