Just after the launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony revealed that it had sold 65.5 million PlayStation 5s in four years. While sales of the console are down 1.1 million units compared to the same period last year (and are down 2 million units total in 2024), this is all nothing since game sales exploded by 14.9% in the second fiscal quarter of 2024, or 77.7 million units.
The players are there
While game sales are clearly increasing, the monthly number of active users of the PlayStation Network (PSN) from Sony remained at 116 million despite a big price increase late last year.
As a result, turnover increased by 9% and operating profit increased by 73% to reach 445.1 billion yen (2.70 billion euros). Given these profits and the fact that the company has a new, more expensive (and likely more profitable) console ready for Christmas, Sony was optimistic about the rest of its year, slightly increasing its revenue forecast.
A large portion of Sony’s game sales are due to the success of action RPG Black Myth: Wukong (available on Amazon), which reportedly sold 20 million copies in the second quarter (PC version included). The recent Astro Bot (also on Amazon on sale), developed by the Japanese giant, also recorded good results, demonstrating that Sony still outperforms Microsoft and is not left behind by Nintendo in terms of creativity.
Sony still has two quarters left in its fiscal year, which ends March 31. Upcoming first-party titles expected before that include Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Monster Hunter Wilds, both scheduled for February 2025. However, Sony’s 2025 fiscal year starting in April could be a blockbuster with highly anticipated games like Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, DOOM: The Dark Ages and Grand Theft Auto VI arriving later next year. GTA 6 is obviously the most anticipated of all. And we’ll see if the PS5 Pro has any real use.
