A CNET survey reveals some interesting figures on the main motivations for purchasing a smartphone as of October 2024. We quickly understand that despite monstrous advertising, generative AI and even AI in its entirety is still far from achieve unanimous support among the general public.
Generative AI doesn’t generate that much enthusiasm
There is no denying that the American tech giants have this gift to make us believe that their new investment will revolutionize the world of tomorrow. Generative AI, which we no longer go a day without talking about, is the perfect example. The artificial intelligence installed in smartphones can do many things, but is it really useful on a daily basis and especially for everyone?
A survey CNET tries to give us a first element of answer. According to the survey figures, only a minority of users are currently using AI features on smartphones. We are talking here about 12% for ChatGPT type services or even 10% for photo editing. In other words, not many people.
Concretely, only 18% of respondents claim that new artificial intelligence features are the main factor in purchasing a new smartphone. Conversely, other elements are well ahead. 61% of them place the battery as the most important element, followed by 46% for storage and 38% for new features around the camera.
Other important data from the survey:
- 25% find that current AI is not useful on smartphones
- 34% have a problem with AI confidentiality
- 45% do not want to spend more money to get AI in their smartphone.
Our point of view
Although it is really behind the competition, Apple is perhaps the only one to take these figures seriously and especially to anticipate a possible loss of steam more quickly than expected. The partnership with ChatGPT is the ultimate proof of this. Under pressure from its investors, it is forced to increase its presence in the field, but do not forget that it is still far from being a primary purchasing factor. iPhone 16 sales speak for themselves.
When we see the use that the majority of customers make of increasingly powerful and capable iPhones, we wonder what percentage will really benefit from AI.
And you, to date, what do you think of generative AI on smartphones?
