For a long time, Apple tries to centralize all its products in the country, being more profitable and surely produce the components of their iPhone, Mac, etc., which depends on other places in the world, which increases costs and generates economic conflicts.
However, many countries have infrastructure and experience in certain issues greater than the United States can have, and it is something that we are going to see below, because Apple, together with TSMC, They will manufacture the chips for the iPhonebut the truth is that it is not as you expect.
New Chips Factory in the United States
As we said, Apple has commissioned TSMC to manufacture chips for its iPhone within the country, creating a new factory in Phoenix, Arizona, started in 2020 and will begin to produce in this 2025. However, only with the process N4 of 5 nanometers.
What does this mean? That will not be able to manufacture the chips of the last iPhone, and that will only serve to produce chips such as the A16 Bionicintroduced in 2022 with the iPhone 14 Pro, and the S9 chip of the Apple Watch Ultra 2, which although they will help reduce the import requests of Taiwan and other places, will not serve for really important and demanded products, which are the latter.
TSMC estimates that future plants in the US will take approximately two years to be completed, which is significantly faster than the current ones, which have taken them 5 years, so we could see new factories that were the order of the day, but Not before 2028as we will see now.
And it is that TSMC has revealed plans for a second factory in Arizona that will focus on the production of 3 nanometers chips, the most advanced process that is currently manufactured in mass and that is used in chips such as the A17 PRO, M3, A18 and M4. However, this new installation will not enter into operation until 2028, when Apple devices are already using 2 nanometers or even more advanced technology.
Therefore, Taiwan will continue to be the leader of chips production, and Apple will have to continue depending on them for their new products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch or even the V Vision, at least for the following years, since, a third factory that will produce chips with 2 nanometers technology and that should be ready before the decade ends. However, TSMC has not given an exact schedule, just indicating that it will be operational “before 2030”.
In summary, Apple continues to bet on its own productions, but it is something slow and expensive, so, for now, it will have to depend on Taiwan, a country far from the American continent, and which many will not know their relevance in these issues, since without them, today we would continue in much less powerful iPhone models.
And you, did you know this? What do you think that Apple wants to produce everything? Is it good for the final customer, or will it be all more expensive, although the purpose is the opposite? Leave us a comment.
